Choosing God: Overcoming Modern Idolatry

Pastor Darren Gerald

September 21, 2025

Day 1: The One True God

Reading: 1 Kings 18:20-40

Devotional: Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal reminds us of the importance of unwavering faith in the one true God. In our modern world, we face many "false gods" - success, wealth, popularity, or even our own desires. These idols promise fulfillment but ultimately leave us empty. Today, reflect on areas of your life where you might be putting other things before God. Ask yourself: "Am I fully committed to God, or am I wavering between two opinions?" Pray for the courage to tear down any idols in your life and recommit yourself to serving the Lord alone.

Day 2: God's Provision in Difficult Times

Reading: 1 Kings 17:1-16

Devotional: The story of Elijah at the Brook Cherith and his encounter with the widow at Zarephath illustrates God's faithfulness in providing for His people, even in the most challenging circumstances. When the brook dried up, God had already prepared the next step for Elijah. In our lives, we may face situations where our resources seem to be drying up. But God always has a "next place" for us. Today, consider any areas where you feel your resources are depleted. Trust that God has a plan for your provision, and be open to His guidance, even if it leads you to unexpected places or people.

Day 3: The Power of Prayer

Reading: James 5:13-18

Devotional: James reminds us of Elijah's powerful prayer that brought both drought and rain. This passage emphasizes that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. However, as the sermon pointed out, the power lies not in the prayer itself, but in the One to whom we pray. Reflect on your prayer life today. Are you praying with confidence in God's power? Are there areas where you've given up praying because you haven't seen results? Remember that God hears and responds to the prayers of His people. Commit to persevering in prayer, trusting in God's wisdom and timing.

Day 4: Jesus: The Way, The Truth, The Life

Reading: John 14:1-14

Devotional: Jesus' claim to be "the way, the truth, and the life" is a profound statement of His divinity and uniqueness. In a world that often promotes many paths to God, Jesus stands out with His exclusive claim. This exclusivity isn't meant to be divisive, but to offer true hope and salvation. Today, meditate on what it means for Jesus to be your way, truth, and life. How does this impact your daily decisions and interactions? Pray for opportunities to share this hope with others who may be searching for truth.

Day 5: Worshiping in Spirit and Truth

Reading: John 4:19-26

Devotional: Jesus' conversation with the Samaritan woman reveals God's desire for true worshipers who worship in spirit and truth. This kind of worship goes beyond rituals or specific locations - it's about a heart fully devoted to God. As we conclude this week's devotional, examine your own worship. Is it genuine and from the heart, or has it become routine? Are there areas where you're trying to "add" something to your worship of God? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you worship God in purity and truth, letting go of any cultural or personal additions that might dilute your devotion to Him.
